Content

The role of forests for society within an industrialized country; statistics on Austrian forests; forest organization in Austria. Principles of forest growth and yield, and their utilization for stands treatment; principles of planning sustainable forest management. Quantification of dendrometric characteristics; methods and criterion of commercial dendrometry. Role and potential of wood production in an international context.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The lecture is dealing with aspects of (austrian) forestry, its historical end ecological conditions. Importance and caracteristics of multiple use forestry should be recognized, proceeding in planning for sustainable use and the most important methods of forest management are to be presented. Another goal will consist of showing the effect of species provenience, site and treatment on inside and external caracteristics of wood as well as methods of quantification in production and commercialization. A part of the lecture will be dedicated to actual influences, resuting from social claims on forest, developments at international wood market and alternatives in production and use of forest products.
