Content

The purpose of the course is to read and discuss recent scientific papers related to animal genetics. A set of papers is chosen at the beginning of the semester, from which the students choose one to present. Every participant should read all papers (typically one per week) and prepare themselves for the discussion. The papers are then presented during the semester with a follow up discussion with the audience. In addition students can try out the role of the chairperson – the person moderating for the discussions.
The student evaluation is based on the attendance and activity during the meetings.

Previous knowledge expected

A general knowledge of quantitative and molecular genetics is expected.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Upon completion of this course the students will increase their ability to critically review scientific publications on multiple levels. At the first step, the students will be able to identify and report the most important results present from scientific papers done by other authors. Secondly, in the process of trying to understand the paper in detail the students will inevitably stumble on expressions or approaches they do not fully understand. These encounters will help them to improve their ability to search for answers at appropriate places or to formulate discussion questions. Finally, the students will increase their capacity to critically review publications from other authors or their own (e.g. MSc thesis), by identifying possible mistakes and inaccuracies as well as suggesting ways to improve the clarity of the presented results.
