Content

The course consists of 3 parts:

Part A: Introduction to laboratory analyses

An overall view of laboratory practices and methodology, including the fundamentals of laboratory safety, laboratory tool (equipment) usage and appropriate sampling techniques. Part A ends with the performance of several parameters of proximal analyses to determine amounts of raw nutrients in a given material (ingredient, compound feed, etc.), as follows:

> dry matter
> crude ash
> crude protein
> crude fat
> crude fiber
> carbohydrates (total sugars and starch)
> phosphorus
> zinc
> gross energy


Part B: Feed formulation & ratio design

Computer-supported formulation of rations for pigs, poultry and cattle

a. introduction to feed formulation and the differences between different animal species.
b. recommentations on where to find nutritional requirements of animals, as well as nutrient content and digestibility of raw materials.
c. data collection from official resources and tables to supplement the obtained laboratory analyses
d. computer-based ration formulation for pigs, poultry and dairy cattle.


Part C: FInal discussion

General discussion and interpretation of the results obtained in the two previous parts of the course.

Previous knowledge expected

Participants are expected to have prior knowledge around animal nutrition and feed/food science

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

- to develop laboratory procedures and practical knowledge of analytics for the
determination of nutrients in (mixed) feed.
- to interpret analysis results or table values to use in ration calculation or compilation of
feed mixtures
- to apply energy and nutrient requirements from tables for ration calculation.
- to determine the suitability of ration components for the respective livestock species from
the analysis results in the laboratory.
- to calculate feed mixtures and rations for various important farm animals (dairy cow, pig,
poultry) considering feed regulations.
- to derive elements of ration control.
- to assess the ecological impact of ration design.
