The lecture will be held in presence during one week in May/June. The time slot will be modified according to your time schedule.
The lecture starts with a theoretical presentation where the students are introduced to selected topics in structure-function relationships of plants. Students select their topic of interest and propose a hypothesis. In order to test this hypothesis, an experimental design is set up together and thereafter the students perform experimental work in the laboratory. Experimental work may include: hydraulic testing, acoustic emission testing, sectioning of plant material with microtomes, embedding techniques, histological staining techniques, microscopy techniques and image analysis. Students have the opportunity to present their work in an oral presentation. The results of the experimental work will be summarized in a written technical protocol.

After having successfully passed this theoretical and practical training course, the students have skills in histological preparation techniques of plant material (thin sectioning, staining and embedding) and in selected physiological methods to measure hydraulic plant stress. They gathered first insights into the design of scientific experiments and dissemination of results. Based on own results on selected topics, they developed an understanding of nature’s design and are able to link structural variability to biological functions necessary for plant survival. Students of this course gained experience in presenting and defending own results and in writing a technical report in English language.
