Content

This exercises will cover qualitative and quantitative Analytical Chemistry.

It aims to provide an understanding of laboratory chemistry and wood chemistry at a basic level. The chapter pH value provides an integrated treatment -- without excessive detail -- of acids, basic compounds, pH measurement and buffers covering the process of solvolysis and complexation. The chapter cation and anion analysis is designed to emphasise basic steps in qualitative and quantitative investigations of more or less complex mixtures (e.g. water hardeners). Finally wood components as lignin derivatives and various extractives are investigated using modern chromatography methods and enzymatically based analysis.

Previous knowledge expected

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

This exercise develops ideas and basic knowledge of basic steps in Analytical Chemistry and gives a brief survey of chemical reactions and interactions to other analytical disciplines. It covers skills in the asessment of chemically related problems formed in the analysis of naturally occuring compounds.
