BOKU-degree-holders in the spatially oriented fields should have a basic knowledge of remote sensing. It is not easy today to maintain an overview of the wide variety of geodata (especially remotely sensed data) and to be able to properly appraise the usefulness and the value of spatial data products. This course provides such an overview.
The theoretical lectures introduce geometrical, physical and methodical fundamentals of remote sensing (photogrammetry, aerial photo interpretation, satellite image analysis).
The practical exercises focus on two case studies where students learn about the practical use of remote sensing data and image analysis techniques:
• case study 1: make a land use / land cover map for a river area using photo interpretation
• case study 2: make a land cover map using satellite image classification for parts of Vienna and calculate percentage imperviousness

It is recommended to attend the course 857.104 Geoinformatik beforehand.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Students will be able to:
• recall geometrical and physical fundamentals of remote sensing
• recall basic principles of capturing aerial photos and geometrical properties
• recall basic principles for the production of orthophotos
• distinguish stereoscopic methods for visualisation of aerial photographs
• identify the practical use of various remote sensing data
• list data sources of satellite images, aerial photos and orthophotos
• distinguish basic land cover types in satellite images and orthophotos
• employ GIS for photo interpretation
• employ image classification for making land cover maps
