The course will be structured in the following thematic blocks:
- Ecology and fundamentals of arid and semiarid areas.
- The role of water
- Soil types
- Erosion and desertification
- Agriculture
- Soil greenhouse gases
- Fire
- Global Change
General theory will be presented along with recent research focusing on soils in arid and semiarid areas.
Dates for SS 2023 are:
Preliminary discussion: 1st of March, 10:00-10:30 (online)
Lectures -> Wednesdays and Thursdays: 8th, 9th, 15th, 16th, 22nd and 23th March, from 9:00 to 12:00

By the end of the lecture, the students will be able:
- To describe the main ecological and socio-economic features of arid and semiarid areas.
- To identify and discuss limitations and opportunities of agricultural production (croplands and livestock) in arid and semiarid areas.
- To assess the relevance of soils in arid and semiarid areas for the production and consumption of greenhouse gases.
- To discuss potential consequences of global change in arid and semiarid areas
