Content

In this course we will develop an overview on socioecological methods by using literatur on concepts and case studies. We will focus on biophysical and socioecological indicators, in particular material and energy flow accounts (MEFA), human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP), life cycle assessment (LCA), footprint family (ecological footprint etc.), and carbon accounting as implemented in the Kyoto protocol and the Paris agreement. Based on a common understanding of methods and indicators, we will conduct a critical discussion on which research question can be addressed by which method and which better not (strengths and weaknesses) as well as possible applications and interpretations of results at the example of case studies.

Previous knowledge expected

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

With successful completion of the course, students will gain the following skills:
•Overview on socioecological methods with a focus on biophysical and socioecological indicators,
•Critical reflection on methods and indicators and their applicability to different research questions (strengths and weaknesses),
•Basic knowledge on application of methods and interpretation of results.
