(Participatory) planning is political and plays an important role in the democratic development of our built environment. In this course, we work with planning theories and practices that concern political-public spaces, paying particular attention to the perspective of citizens' initiatives and civil society organisations and their interfaces with (local) government and administration.
Participants of this course (which is also offered in combination with the VS 854330) will conduct empirical and secondary research on the economic, social and spatial framework conditions of different (participatory) planning processes. The aim is to identify opportunities for strengthening genuine participation and civic engagement in urban and landscape planning.
We will collaborate with the civil society organisation “Solektiv”, which plans and self-organises the public space "Sonnenpark St. Pölten". Sonnenpark is located in the former industrial district in the south of St. Pölten (the capital of Lower Austria with a population of roughly 57.600 inhabitants). The area is designated as construction site but has - since many years - been successfully defended by committed citizens as a public open space. It offers many opportunities to explore different (participatory) planning approaches and their interfaces.
