Analysis of selected protective structures via numerical methods, as for example the Finite Element Method; introduction to technical measures for building protection; analysis of selected protective structures and of technical systems for building protection.
1.) Overview of protective structures (e.g. structures against mountain torrent, avalanches or rock fall, but also supporting structures and erosion protection structures)

Global analysis of selected protection constructions and detailed analysis „from formulation to final result“

Technical measures for building protection
1.) Basic principles and concepts for dealing with natural hazards: procedures, hazards, risk, potential for damage, hazard potential, protection targets and protection objects, integrated risk management; overview of natural hazards and distinction of gravitational natural hazards; risk analysis; disposition concept, met./hyd. Data and numerical prediction models; case analyses
2.) Risk analysis and its legal implications: risk analysis: basic principles of spatial planning (hazard maps , disaster registers, registers of protective structures); legal implications: building regulations and legal procedures with regard to natural hazards; rules and regulations for building protection; building insurance
3.) Risk assessment and economy, risk evaluation: protection targets, protected assets, matrix of protection targets, conflicts
Protective measures: spatial planning, protective structures, protection forests, emergency and contingency planning, organizational measures, insurances
Economical aspects: introduction to cost-benefit analysis when planning protective measures against natural hazards, practical example

Previous knowledge expected

The course requires basic understanding of the scientific foundations of the Bachelor’s programme, and in particular basic knowledge of:
(a) Mechanics ,
(b) Structural design and strength of materials,
(c) Structural design and dimensioning of protective structures.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Students will learn to efficiently use commercial Finite Element software packages for the assessment of protective structures and technical systems for building protection. Students will also acquire the skills necessary for designing, analyzing and assessing sets of measures for building protection.
