The lecture provides an overview on the architecture, occurrence, biosynthesis, molecular biology, and analysis of bacterial glycoconjugates, as well as their impact of infectious diseases pinpointing strategies for therapeutic intervention
The lecture includes the following topics:
Bacterial glycoconjugates: S-layer glycoproteins of bacteria and archaea, peptidoglycan/pseudomurein, lipopolysaccharides, teichoic/ teichuronic/ lipoteichoic acids, glycosylated cell surface appendages, other bacterial glycoconjugates
Glycobiology & infectious diseases: biofilm, quorum sensing, OMVs
Therapeutic strategies: e.g., glycoconjugate vaccines
- Previous knowledge expected

General Microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
After successful completion of this lecture, students have acquired a deep understanding of bacterial glycobiology comprising theoretical background andapplied aspects for interlinking glycobiology and infectious diseases with application potential in a biomedical context.
Students are able
… to assess the biological relevance of different bacterial glycoconjugates
… to design rational approaches for influencing glycobiology-based biological phenomena
… to apply their knowledge in the way of looking at scientific challenges in glycobiology
Students have acquired theoretical competence in glycoconjugate analysis and data interpretation as well as in glycosylation engineering.
