Content

Summary and update of cellular metabolism: catabolism and anabolism, energy conversion, reduction and oxidation equvalents.
Balances and equations describing cellular processes: mass, energy, redox and carbon balances; basic models to describe cells.
Application of metabolic modelling for metabolic and cell engineering.
Systems biology: describing the complexity of cellular systems.
Methods: metabolic flux analysis, metabolomics, transcriptomics, quantitative proteomics.
Tools for metabolic and cell engineering.
Major biotechnological challanges: New metabolic pathways leading to new products. Microbial stress during production. Protein secretion.
Applications of metabolic engineering: overproduction of metabolites with microorganisms.
Applications of cell engineering: improving cellular properties, e.g. secretion of recombinant proteins, strain robustness (stress resistance).

Previous knowledge expected
