Introduction of the basics of soil bioengineering, of the effect of soil bioengineering systems and underlying technical/mechanical/hydrological aspects
Introduction of soil bioengineering methods and techniques for
-slope and gully stabilisation
-river bank stabilisation
-slope drainage and slide stabilisation
Introduction of
-plant and construction material, planting methods and construction principles
-greening methods and erosion control above the timber line
-maintenance and conservation of effectiveness
-constructional defects, faulty design and cause of failure
International research and state-of-the-art (methods, results) are imparted by means of paper research, reading and discussion. Instructions for the interpretation of published results and for the assessment of the quality of methods and results are provided.
Decision making and specific choice of measures and methods are trained by means of case studies.
- Previous knowledge expected
-
Knowledge of terms and definitions in the subject of mass movements/erosion
Knowledge of native (deciduous) trees of the montane and subalpine zones
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
The students acquire the required knowledge, skills and expertise in soil bioengineering techniques for slope and bank stabilisation and erosion control in torrent catchment areas. They are competent in autonomous decision making, choice, planning and implementation of soil bioengineering concepts for erosion protection and for the stabilisation of erosion sources and eroded zones above and below the timberline.
