Content

This course deals with different aspects of livestock husbandry. Central themes are: Importance and limitations of livestock production, characterisation of different systems (low-input versus high input), breeding and feeding strategies with a focus on cattle, small ruminants and pigs, use of non-conventional animals like guinea-pig, camel, water buffalo, and livestock development strategies favoured by different institutions.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The course aims to provide basic knowledge about livestock husbandry in the tropics in its climatic and social context. The interrelationships in various systems of production and ways of intervention to improve production and livelihood are studied.
