Addressing complex environmental problems - like those we face in industrialized riverine landscapes today - requires interdisciplinary cooperation between natural, social and engineering sciences and the humanities. The course is an open forum to discuss potentials and challenges of such interdisciplinary cooperation. The course is organized as a ‘Guided Reading’. We will closely read and intensively discuss papers dealing with topics that are fundamental for the kind of inter- and transdisciplinary scholarship the new BOKU-Doctoral School "Human River Systems in the 21st century" strives for.
Previous knowledge expected

No specific previous knowledge is expected, but the course is aimed at PhD-students, in particular PhD-students of the BOKU-Doctoral School "Human River Systems in the 21st century".
Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Upon completion of the course, PhD-students are able to address crucial constraints of effective interdisciplinary research, specifically research on ‘coupled socio-ecological systems’. They have learned to critically read and discuss significant scholarly literature on those topics. On a more general level, this ‘Guided Reading’ will enable students to consider what makes a paper a ‘good’ one for a readership with diverse disciplinary backgrounds.
