A. Transport planning - general principles and definitions
subject/tasks/integration levels, fundamental terms mobility and transport, accessibility, modes of transport, transport supply and demand, effects (overview)

B. Process of planning
Planning cycle and methods of measurement

C. Mobility surveys

D. Traffic safety

E: Environmental impacts

F. Introduction on road design, traffic flow, cross-sections, basic elements of horizontal and vertical alignment, basic elements of design (structual and landscaping)

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

This lecture allows attendees to obtain an overall picture on a transport planner’s field of work.
The students are familiar with relevant terms of the subject area to be able to discuss competitively with transport planners.
The students understand transport planning as a process and are familiar with the elementary planning process.
The students have acquired an overview of decision-making tools in transport planning; they are able to derive conclusions from the results and to evaluate projects and measures.
The students understand fundamental procedures and methods for the data collection.
The students have gained an overview of the general accidents in Austria and influence factors.
The students are able to understand, interpret and question transport planning documents and analyses.
The students have a critical understanding of the requirements of different user groups regarding street design.
The students got an insight in the field of road alignment.
The students are able to name the main environmental impacts of traffic (infrastructure).
The students are able to recommend basic measures for the development of sustainable transport systems (e.g. in the field of travel demand management, accessibility improvements, traffic safety, reduction of transport related emissions).
