The seminar serves to familiarize students with the basic theories, methods and approaches of Social Ecology. Based on the intensive reading of selected texts (mainly in English), students acquire the basics of one of the seminar topics. Topics include social metabolism, eco-efficiency, dematerialization, recycling management, ecosystem services, resilience, the Anthropocene, social-ecological transitions, sustainability transformation, the 1950s syndrome, planetary boundaries or geoengineering.

After successful completion of the course:
•Students have acquired in-depth critical understanding of a selected topic within Social Ecology and adjacent areas of interdisciplinary sustainability research.
•In addition they have greatly improved their proficiency in discussing socioecological questions, commenting on scholarly writings and write academic texts themselves.
