You must at least understand the terms and concepts of plant breeding. Minimum: Bachelor lecture Plant Breeding successfully completed. Better still the lecture and exercise: Plant Breeding Principles and Methods (957320 and 957321)
---
Alternatively: You can learn the basics of plant breeding from the textbook: Heiko Becker (2011) PFLANZENZÜCHTUNG, Ulmer UTB, ISBN 978-3-8252-3558-1, (to be found in the textbook collection of the BOKU library, shelfmark: 53.40-2/2A). For English readers: the books by Rex BERNARDO are highly recommended: Essentials of Plant Breeding and Breeding for Quantitative Traits in Plants; these textbooks can be borrowed from the BOKU library.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
The aim of this course is to familiarize students specifically with the breeding of selected agricultural crops.
The focus is on acquiring knowledge about the origin, fertilization biology, breeding methodology, variety types and breeding objectives for selected European crops.
In addition, the topics of breeding for disease resistance and breeding of varieties for organic farming are covered.
The aim of this lecture is to acquire the competence to link knowledge of plant cultivation and phytopathology with breeding objectives, variety types and the breeding processes and genetic resources required depending on genetics and botany.
