Content

Water Resources Management in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Water is a key resource for sustainable development, yet its management in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (in the past also referred to as Developing and Emerging Countries) presents unique challenges. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles of integrated water resources management in these regions, considering the impact of socio-economic and cultural conditions. Students will explore how these factors influence planning processes, resource management strategies, and the development, operation, and maintenance of technical water infrastructure.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) principles and their application in international development contexts in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. The course is structured around the IWRM Toolbox developed by the Global Water Partnership (GWP), covering four key pillars:

Institutions and Participation
Enabling Environment
Management Instruments
Financing

Through case studies, group work, and practical exercises, students will also explore how socio-economic, cultural, and natural conditions influence IWRM planning.
