Intro: Social impact of plant diseases, risk of genetic erosion, value of genetic resources.
Virulence mechanisms of bacteria and fungi (viral plant pathogens, nematods). Molecular biology tools to dissect virulence. Insights form pathogen genome sequences.
Cloning of plant disease resistance genes, signal transduction mechanisms, activation of plant defense responses (PR proteins and secondary metabolites).Potential applications of molecular breeding and biotechnological approaches.

- Previous knowledge expected
-
Molecular biology basics.
.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
The course should give an overview about the enormous progress made due to the introduction of techniques of molecular biology and genomics into plant pathology, and which potential applications and consequences for society are expected.
The participants obtain knowledge about the status of the research field and can identify open research questions and knowledge gaps. The can recognize the challenges of plant pathogens for food security and society, and are able to understand and to judge the relevance of modern molecular plant breeding strategies and biotechnological approaches.
