Content

Students are introduced into modern Building Services Engineering (BSE) as well as Building Automation Systems (BAS). BSE includes the design, functionality and operation/optimization of convenience- and comfort systems in buildings. BSE topics that will be covered include HVAC systems (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning), hereby focusing on Air Handling Units (AHU), furthermore Lighting as well as operation, control and simple yet effective optimization measures for these systems using building automation. BAS-topics that will be covered include general automation structures in buildings, BACnet Services as well as energy management systems and their effective integration and use in buildings.

Previous knowledge expected

Basic knowledge of fluid dynamics, measurement and control technology.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Students know and understand the function, operation and energy-efficient control of common HVAC systems, in particular the energy-efficient operation of ventilation systems and building automation systems.
Students are able to analyze and evaluate the operation of HVAC systems in commercial buildings and, based on measurement and visualized building automation data, also develop optimization suggestions for trouble-free and energy-efficient operation of the building.
Students acquire the skills to exchange ideas with building operators and -planners and to develop optimization suggestions and solutionbased measures.
