Content

Discussion of oligosaccharides - primarily eukaryotic N-, O- and lipid-linked glycans, their structure, analysis of their structure, examination of their function and the genetic/genomic and enzymatic basis of their biosynthesis.

Topics include:
Basics of N- and O-glycosylation
Glycosylation of mammalian and non-mammalian systems, including parasites
Glycosylation and disease
Aspects of glycosylation analysis
Chemical glycobiology

On two afternoons, there will be a more in-depth introduction to glycomic data and small practical involving MALDI-TOF MS analysis of a glycan.

Previous knowledge expected

Good knowledge of biochemistry

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The students have an increased understanding of protein and lipid modifications, especially of glycoproteins, glycolipids and proteoglycans.
