Content: Discussion of oligosaccharides - primarily eukaryotic N-, O- and lipid-linked glycans, their structure, analysis of their structure, examination of their function and the genetic/genomic and enzymatic basis of their biosynthesis.

Topics include:
Basics of N- and O-glycosylation
Glycosylation of mammalian and non-mammalian systems, including parasites
Glycosylation and disease
Aspects of glycosylation analysis
Chemical glycobiology

On two afternoons, there will be a more in-depth introduction to glycomic data and small practical involving MALDI-TOF MS analysis of a glycan.
Previous knowledge expected: Good knowledge of biochemistry
Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences): The students have an increased understanding of protein and lipid modifications, especially of glycoproteins, glycolipids and proteoglycans.
