This course is held as lecture AND seminar, which means that the principles and background of some major biotechnological products, their production processes and major manufacturers are presented as lectures, and the students are encouraged to research and present information on another group of products. Such a seminar work will be a major part of the course evaluation.
The course will be complemented by two half day excursions to manufacturing sites in/near Vienna.
General content:
Main products of pharmaceutical and industrial biotechnology, principles of their production processes and main world wide producers.
Lecture part:
Ethanol
Lactic acid
Antibiotics
Erythropoietin
Antibodies and antibody fragments
Seminar part:
Citric acid
Succinic acid
Insulin (E. coli and yeast processes, new derivatives)
Technical enzymes (e.g. for detergents, textile industry, biorefinery)
- Previous knowledge expected

This course is intended as a practical overview towards the end of the master curriculum.
While there are no formal requirements, we suggest to pass Bioprocess Engineering, Cell Factories and Up- and Downstream Processing before.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
The participants have an overview about the main commercial products of industrial biotechnology - both of biopharmaceutical and non-pharma industry.
They know, which production hosts are used in industry. They understand the production processes and they recognize which are the main players on the current biotech market.
At the same time the participants understand how difficult it can be to find data about the industrial reality. They learn to analyse publicly available data and to deduct industrial reality.
