Content

Beginning with atoms, the lecture builds the concepts of chemistry from fundamental principles and a chemist´s view of nature. It starts with models of atoms and molecules, gives some insights to quantum mechanics and molecular orbitals and finally shows how bulk properties emerge from properties of atoms and molecules. The relation between chemical bonds and the structure of molecules is shown. Further chapters are about the nomenclature of inorganic compounds, the symbolizing of chemical reactions and balancing of chemical equations, chemical equilibria, acids and bases, the pH scale and electrochemistry.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

It is the aim of this lecture to provide an overview of General and Inorganic Chemistry and demonstrate the fundamental principles. After passing the lecture the student will understand the electronic structure of atoms, the development and principles of the periodic table, basic concepts of chemical bonding and molecular geometry of simple inorganic compounds, the chemical equilibrium, acid-base equilibria as well as principles of inorganic electrochemistry.
