This course explores critical topics in land administration and land use planning. It is designed to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical insights through worldwide examples. With an international focus, this course will enhance the students understanding of how land is managed, governed, and planned in different contexts worldwide.
This course comprises four introductory lectures and a workshop based on student presentations.
Contents of lecture units:
- Introduction to Land Administration and Management: Explore the principles of land administration and management, including its significance in social and economic development and insights into contemporary challenges and developments in the domain.
- Land Administration Systems: Gain an understanding of cadastre and land register systems, which form the backbone of land ownership and land use documentation.
- Land Tenure and Access to Land: Understand various forms of land tenure and their implications for equitable access and sustainable development.
- Introduction to Land Use Planning: Learn key concepts and systems involved in land use planning for optimal resource allocation and long-term sustainability.
In the workshop students will have the opportunity to participate in impulse presentations and to critically reflect land administration and land use planning systems of selected countries. Students (in groups of two) will select a country and critically examine its land administration or land use planning system. The findings will be presented as an oral presentation and discussed with the audience. Throughout the course discussions will be facilitated.

After completing this course students are familiar with topics of land administration and management and land use planning in an international context. Furthermore they are able to:
-Develop an understanding of land administration and management as a global issue, with particular emphasis on land tenure and access to land.
-Understand various methods and instruments used in land administration, including cadastre and land register systems.
-Understand key concepts and systems related to land use planning.
-Be able to conduct a literature review on selected topics within land administration and management or land use planning and present their findings.
-Engage in critical discussions on challenges related to land administration and management challenges or land use planning.
