This lecture gives basic information about the environment of microorganisms in soils and the position of microorganisms within the carbon-, nitrogen and phosphorus-transformation in soils. One part of the lecture focusses on the turnover and decay dynamics of soil organic matter. In the last part of the lecture a short overview of important methodical approaches to determine soil microbial biomass and activity is given.
