Content

Compact repetition of thermodynamic concepts/basic equations; Types of heat transfer including definitions (heat flow, density, average temperature difference, etc.); Heat conduction in stationary materials (stationary heat conduction in walls, hollow cylinders and hollow spheres, 1-dimensional unsteady heat conduction); metrics and dimensional analysis; Forced convection (determination of heat transfer coefficients etc.), free convection including superposition of free and forced convection; Stationary heat transfers (flat wall, curved wall); Heat transfer during condensation (of pure substances) and evaporation; thermal radiation; heat exchangers and stirred tanks; Analogy to mass transfer.

Previous knowledge expected

Solid knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics is mandatory.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After successfully completing the lecture, students can…
….Define and distinguish between types of heat transfer and apply the laws of heat transfer to calculate heat flows or temperatures, heat transfer (flat wall, cylinder and sphere), stationary and quasi-stationary heat transfer (example of a stirred tank).
… explain the principle and application of heat exchangers and calculate heat flows and heat exchange surfaces.
...define/assign dimensionless key figures to the types of heat and mass transfer and apply them.
... explain the analogy between heat and mass transfer;
