Content

This course deals with process engineering basics and is structured in two sections.
The first section comprises basic principles of technical drawings with a focus on standards, scales, geometric views, dimensions, sections, thread representation, representation of standardised components, bearings and gear wheels.
In the second section, basic principles of materials are discussed with a focus on mechanical material properties in combination with mechanical impacts on components. Apart from metals we discuss ceramics/glass, polymeres and composites. In addition to the mechanical properties we discuss chemical, thermal, optical, electrical and magnetic properties.

Previous knowledge expected

High-school level knowledge in mathematics, physics and chemistry.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

General formulation:
Knowledge of the basic principles of technical drawing and the characteristics of materials including the discussion of advantages and disadvantages in practical application. Comprehensive reading of technical drawings and execution of technical drawings in combination with material selection.

1) Knowledge
The students master the basic rules of technical drawing. They know the relevant drawing standards and the standardized font. They further know the representation and dimensioning of simple mechanical components (molded, rotated, and milled parts) in technical drawings.
The students are familiar with the systematics of materials and know important material properties and the process of determining these properties.

2) Skills
The students are able to make technical drawings according to the standards and by respecting the basic rules of technical drawing. Further, they can interpret and explain more complex technical drawings including standardized components and dimensions.
The students are able to determine the allowability of a certain material in a defined stress case based on property tables.

3) Competences
The students know how to communicate their technical ideas and designs in simple technical drawings or sketches for further consideration. Additionally, they are in the position to communicate and professionally interact with construction engineers and technical drwing specialists.
The students are in a position to rationally propose materials for specific applications and to discuss and justify their proposal.
