The course covers the cultural history of landscape architecture from the ancient times to the 20th century. We investigate how socio-economic circumstances shaped the understanding and design of landscape and open spaces throughout the history. A solid understanding of landscape history is essential to identify and to assess landscape projects, their meaning, value and function, in order to conserve, manage and sustainably develop them.

Aim is to be able to
- to identify the driving forces which shape the development and design of landscapes and open spaces
- to know the main design principles and elements
- to develop an understanding for the cultural values of landscape and garden architecture
- to perceive the cultural, social and spatial stewardship of landscape architecture profession
- to be able to contextualise recent landscape architecture and the own work within landscape history
