Content

Introduction: some facts and figures; legislative background. Managing road maintenance: road condition - minimum requirements and maintenance activities; control of road maintenance schedules and activities; taking inventories, road database. Organisation: road and motorway maintenace facilities, vehicles and equipment. Road safety: route supervision; keeping the road-user informed. Winter: accident patterns; costs; gritting and clearing technologies; environmental issues; procedures for optimising maintenance. Landscape management: maintenance of grass, trees and shrubs: Keeping roads clean and removing rubbish: cleaning the road, machinery. Maintaining roads and preparing them for traffic: asphalt roads; concrete roads; Block pavements, unbound pavements. Drainage: function and importance, control and maintenance. Road accesories: traffic signs; traffic lights; crash barriers. Roadworks, road edges and embankments: organisation of supervision; maintaining road edges and embankments. Controlling and directing traffic: emergency calls; road conditions and traffic reports, rerouting traffic; influencing speeds; black ice and fog warning facilities. Road maintenance issues in developing coutries.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The aim of these lectures is to give the students the basic knowledge they need to be able to manage road maintenance facilities. Specific information is also given on the care and maintenance of roads.
