Content

We provide an overview over monitoring methods and their advantages and disadvantages, and we show how these monitoring data can be used for modelling and simulation of visitor flows and behaviour, as well as for recreation area management. One part of the lecture demonstrates the practical use of monitoring devices or data analysis of visitor survey data.

Importance of visitor data for sustainable visitor management in recreation and conservation areas
Goals of monitoring, simulation, and modelling of visitor flows and visitor behaviour
Which data are necessary for the simulation and modelling of visitor flows and visitor behaviour?
Which monitoring methods can be used to collect data? What are the advantages and disadvantages of various monitong techniques (visitor counters, video observation, on-site interviews etc.)
Analysis of visitor data
Modelling visitor use:
Modelling of visitor behaviour using for example regression analysis, stated preference and choice models
Simulation and modelling of visitor flows depending on weather and the day of the week
Computer- based simulation models: micro and macrosimulation models, agent-based models

Seminar part (Student's choice):
1) Analysis of visitor survey data based on existing data, or
2) Analysis of visitor count data based on existing data, or
3) Practical use of monitoring methods such as pressure pads, passive or active infrared sensors; or
4) Modelling of visitor use based on existing data

Previous knowledge expected

Experience with the Excel statistics module or SPSS is recommended, but not essential. You may need to bring a laptop for the 2nd unit and obtain an SPSS student licence from the ZID.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Students know which data collection methods for visitor monitorings/surveys can be used, how and where. They know how to analyze data.
The exercise section (or analysis of survey data) demonstrates the use of data in practice. Students will be able to carry out simple analysis steps after completing the course. They can define the requirements for selected statistical tests for the analysis of social empirical data.
