Content

Two groups are offered on different topics.

Group Tusch
Designs for the Lusatian Lakeland
We will be focussing on post-mining landscapes. Our project area is located around 100 kilometres south of Berlin. The task concerns the development of action concepts and concrete designs as a contribution to the transformation process of the region. Together with students from Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, we will start on site during the last week of the holidays. After the workshop in Lusatia, the projects will be finalised in Vienna.

Group Furlan/Fauster/Stecher
Repositioning Landscape
This is a time of radical transformations. We live in an era of global economic growth and rapid urbanisation. Our climate is breaking down. Our resources, fertile land, water, soil, and raw materials are being depleted. However, could we imagine alternative growth based on a landscape as a value system?
The design studio focuses on the agency of landscape as a guiding element for future urban and territorial transformation. Specifically, it focuses on the territory of Lake Ossiach, nestled between the verge of the Alps and the Voralpen in Carinthia.
Emphasizing a holistic approach, the studio aims to address the ecological, climatic, economic, and social pressures unique to the Lake Ossiach region by thinking and acting through the landscape. Our goal is to investigate how landscape can drive alternative urban development strategies and designs for the territory's socio-ecological transition, with a particular focus on land sealing and the interplay between productivity and the landscape's elements of ground and water. To strengthen the analysis, we will conduct a field trip to Feldkirch at Lake Ossiach, gaining valuable insights from local community members and the municipality. These insights will enrich our strategies and designs, which will be developed at various scales using map, video and section tools in a studio setting in Vienna.
The studio will have a strong and crucial focus on mapping and design. It will be conducted in English and German, providing a platform for participants to showcase and enhance their skills in these areas.
Previous knowledge of GIS and design programs or willingness to learn is recommended.

Previous knowledge expected

Attending the following courses in combination can provide important synergies and enables modular linking on the basis of the project: 852313 Planting design, 852309 CAD applied to landscape architecture project, 852311 Modelling.
Basic knowledge of surveying and analysing, design, plan drawing, landscaping/construction technology, detailed technical planning and plant knowledge is expected.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The objective of the course "Landsacape design project" is to deepen the technical knowledge in the area of the landscape architectural design process. This includes the realisation of the landscape architectural design, which is carried out in an exemplary and project-led approach. The knowledge acquired includes the theoretical analysis of landscape architectural questions and the design process based on this.
After completing the course, students will be able to understand and conceptualise the entire landscape architectural design process and carry it out independently. The competences include the formulation of the problem, the qualitative merging of the actual state and the target state, with the resulting written and planned implementation of the design proposals in the context of the respective site.
