Content

Literature search & review; formulation of research objectives & hypotheses; developing adequate study design, selecting appropriate methods including the statistical design, setting-up a time-plan and cost estimation; presentation and justification of MSc research proposals; get experience in writing an MSc research proposal.

Previous knowledge expected

•Profound knowledge in aquatic ecology and/or aquatic ecosystem management (e.g. 30 ECTS of successfully finished courses in aquatic ecology and/or aquatic ecosystem management )
•Participants are expected to have potential research topics of their own interest in mind.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After successful completion of this course, participants are able to:
•Engage critically with theory and literature in a chosen field of research;
•Develop research questions in the context of current knowledge which can be answered by a research project;
•Set explicit research objectives and hypotheses for a proposed research project;
•Justify study designs, research methods, sampling designs and methods of analysis which are valid, feasible and efficient;
•Develop realistic time tables and cost estimations;
•Compose a detailed written research project proposal;
•Present and defend a research project proposal;
•Review and critically reflect on the validity and appropriateness of research proposals
