The rapid and uninterrupted development of wind energy requires early design decisions for this technology and the identification of alternatives and avoidance options for potentially disadvantageous developments. In particular, the combination of the desire for a high or even complete coverage of the Austrian electricity demand by renewable energy carriers with the desire for a cost-effective (as close as possible to the net price) and environmentally compatible variant to the production, makes wind energy particularly interesting. Despite its many advantages, this technology is also not free of risks.
This seminar gives an introduction to wind energy and discusses various related issues using current case studies.
Procedure of the seminar:
After an introduction to wind energy technology some of the following topics are selected and covered in detail:
Wind energy and resources, recycling
Social acceptance of wind energy
Special locations (forest, mountains, ...)
Ice shed and ice throw
Small wind power
Probabilistic safety analysis in wind power plants
The role of wind energy in the (future) energy system
In addition, a current topic of the institute will be presented in the introduction.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
After successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
- explain the technical and scientific fundamentals of wind energy technology.
- describe social, economic, biological and other issues that affect wind energy.
- identify and formulate complex interrelationships of possibly conflicting demands and challenges in wind energy.
Further, students will have worked on one aspect of a current research topic and summarized the results.
