Content

Lecture with excursion dealing with the role of forests in mountain risk engineering. The effect of forests on the following hazards is discussed: torrential processes (floods, bedload transport, debris flows), avalanches, rock-fall.

The exam will be based on a conference typically setting. Presentation of an article and defense of that work!

Previous knowledge expected

Basic understanding of involuntary natural hazards is expected.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Identify the role of mountain forests concerning natural hazards and related risks.
Recognize ecosystem services of mountain forests and Identify the protective function of mountain forests.
Design management strategies for forests in areas prone to snow avalanches, landslides, floods and soil erosion.
Assess the role of mountain forests in risk management and Identify the limitations of biological protection against natural hazards.
Presentation of scientific results under time limit and confrontation of questions from an auditorium.
