Fundamental importance of grassland regarding income of farmers,
conversion of forage in livestock farming, cultural landscape,
protection of biodiversity and soil, water and air as important
resource. Multivarious and different utilization of mountainous
grassland as well as factors which influence the agricultural
production will be discussed. Plants, plant species, plant communities,
but also yield amounts and forage quality in different management types
will be considered. Grassland renewing, breeding of forage plants and
the composition of seed mixtures for permanent grassland and ley
farming will be studied. Forage conservation and forage evaluation are
essential topics, which can be seen as a close link to the nutrition of
ruminants.

- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Setup consciousness for the importance of the management of the
Austrian grassland for grassland- and livestock farmers as the basis of
animal production from forage, for the protection of well cared-for
landscapes with valuable plant- and animal communities; comprehensive
introduction into the ecological management, based on nutrient
circulation and nature aspects. Special knowledge in a management,
which is well adapted to the local conditions concerning fertilization,
utilization and cultivation of meadows, pastures and ley farming areas.
Understanding the influence of management on biodiversity, forage
amount and forage quality as well as the complex interactions with
animal production in the natural cycle.
