Content

The lecture in based on an interdisciplinary approach of river morphology and aquatic ecology. The introduction into the field of aquatic ecology is based on abiotic (e.g. physical/chemical basics, river typology) and biotic components (fish, benthic organisms), whereby priority is given to riverine ecosystems. Within a second (main) part, the theoretical background of river morphology and sediment transport is presented.
Additionally, and as the key issue of the lecture, the interaction between river morphology and aquatic organisms are described based on various case studies.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Based on the interdisciplinary character of the lecture the students should achieve basic knowledge about morphological processes and their interaction with aquatic organisms. Students will learn the basic physico-chemical and morphological processes in aquatic ecosystems. Based on this knowledge on abiotic criteria, they should be able to differentiate between individual river- and habitat types and to identify their related biocenoses. After completion of this course, students should be able to identify main hydro-morphological alterations and to assess their impact on aquatic organisms. Furthermore, the gathered knowledge should enable the students to discuss suitable restauration- and mitigation measures in an integrative manner.
