The course "Geodata analysis" is an expansion of the course "Remote Sensing and Geoinformation Systems".
The course aims at generating new information from existing geodata and an introducing the manifold tools for geoprocessing. In the course analysis tools for the processing of vector and raster data shall be learned in detail, which were only mentioned superficially in the introductory course.
We will work with free available geodata and the open source software QGIS. At the beginning the methods of data pre-processing are treated. Specifically, it is about the handling of geodata, which are available in different coordinate reference systems. A further aspect concerns the evaluation of the data quality and the correction of geometry errors.
The actual data analysis includes the various geoprocessing tools for vector data and the functions of Map Algebra for raster data.
In addition to 2D data, a digital terrain model will also be used and processed. The goal is to perform simple modelling with the help of a GIS. The results will be presented as a map and a simple web application.
- Previous knowledge expected
-
Attendance of the course Remote Sensing and Geoinformation Systems (UBRM) or similar courses. Basic knowledge in GIS (ArcGIS or QGIS) are required while a detailled knowledge of QGIS is not essential. An introduction to the software and a repetition will be given in the first unit.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
Students gain in-depth knowledge of the analysis of 2D and 3D geodata. In addition to the geoprocessing tools for vector data (overlay operators), the most important functions from the field of map algebra are used in raster processing.
