Content

Identification of Austrian mammal species on the basis of habitus (partly assessment of age classes or sex), skull, track, droppings, traces caused by forage, dwelling, call, etc. The course focuses on the following native animal groups: ungulates, predators, hares, rodents, insectivores. Thereby the most relevant representative species and traits are discussed. Within the course a half-day training and an all-day excursion are integrated.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After successful completion of this course, the students are able to detect direct and indirect indications as physical characteristics and species-specific traits that can be found in the field. The Students know how these indications are to describe, to analyze, to combine, to differentiate, to interpret and to classify in order to suggest, based on arguments, a particular animal species. Further more the students are capable to asses how the indications are to be evaluated.
