The course is designed to briefly introduce students to methods to conduct research in the area of transport planning.
The course gives a brief overview of research methodologies and it deals with research processes including information retrieval, discussion and evaluation of results, and presentation of research work to the scientific community and the general public.
In particular, in the courses we will go through some applied research examples, from both quantitative and qualitative cases, and discuss issues to be cautious about.
- Previous knowledge expected
-
No specific prerequisites, but an interest in transport planning and/or travel behaviour related issues would make the course more relevant.
Basic understanding of quantitative/qualitative analysis would be useful.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
After finishing the course, the student shall be able to:
•Critically reflect on the predominant and alternative research methods in transport planning and/or behavioural analysis, particularly his/her own research approach
•Evaluate methodological approaches in published research in the context of broader methodological discourses,
•Critically review the research approach and methodology of another field within transport science,
•Articulate, in oral and written forms, a research design and methodology appropriate to the student’s own research.
The above criteria, expressed through active participation in class sessions and written reflections.
