Content

This course explains and discusses the services of consultants and engineers in water sector projects in countries of the Global South using concrete project examples. The lecturer will present projects he has implemented with international teams in various project countries. He also invites colleagues with much international experience from consulting companies and international organisations as guest speakers to share their first-hand experiences.

The projects will cover a broad cross-section from a technical-thematic point of view and different project services.

Contributions will cover the various sub-sectors, e.g.:
- hydrology, water resources management, management information systems, decision support systems
- infrastructure development in water supply, wastewater and urban drainage
- hydropower development
- natural hazards: flood protection
- irrigation and agriculture

Different service profiles - from sector policy to construction site supervision, are covered, e.g.:
- Country assistance: water sector reform incl. policy and strategy development, sector regulation
- Project identification: master planning, feasibility studies, due diligence
- Procurement support: support public clients with the development of procurement strategy and during the procurement process
- Infrastructure implementation: engineering design and supervision of construction works on site
- Institutional and corporate development
- Training and capacity development services

Previous knowledge expected

- LV "Hydrologie und Wasserwirtschaft I + II" recommended; or equivalent experience
- English language skills

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

This course aims to show students the wide range of career opportunities they have in the international water sector. Challenges in international projects are discussed from a professional (technical-thematic) and project management perspective.
