Content

The supply of basic food commodities; the world population and their nutritional situation; international food trade and ´over production´; instability and its causes; malnutrition; political measures to prevent malnutrition; the principles of development theory; the theory of economic growth; the role of agriculture in development processes; agricultural systems; the relationship between agricultural growth, food supply and environmental damage; international trade; the politics of food security; international debt; international food aid; evaluating food aid; agricultural reforms; types of development aid; aid institutions; project evaluation.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The lecture:
- give students an awareness of global food supply problems,
- suggest possible causes or explanations for these problems,
- familiarise the students with issues of international agricultural development and food security and,
- enable students to recognise the institutional aspects of the politics of food
