Content

General properties of the four material groups, structure of materials, mechanical testing methods, deformation and strength, metallic materials, ceramics, polymers, cutting tool materials.

Wood properties such as density, wood water relations (moisture content, sorption, swelling, shrinking, difusion etc), elastomechanical properties (strength, stiffness, rheology etc.), acoustic, electrical, thermal properties, wood colour etc.

Previous knowledge expected

Basics in physics and mechanics

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Basic knowledge of the composition and structure of materials and how these determine their mechanical, physical and chemical properties. Overview of technically important metals, ceramics, polymers and composite materials.

Detailed knowledge about fundamentals of wood phyisics. Understanding wood as a material and its interaction to the environmant and operational demands.
