Note on the course in the summer semester 2026:
This course will be offered once in SS 2026 jointly with an ERASMUS+ course. Since students (and lecturers) from Latvia, Poland, and Germany will participate, the course will exceptionally be held in English. It consists of a blocked online component and a blocked on-site component. German slides can be provided afterwards.
Course contents
The course covers classical and innovative methods for monitoring and assessing the release of greenhouse-relevant gases and odorous substances from biological waste management processes including composting, anaerobic treatment (biogas production), mechanical-biological waste treatment, landfilling, and in-situ aeration. Examples of methods addressed:
-Gas potential tests
-FID screening
-Chamber methods for emission measurements
-Open-path measurement technologies combined with dispersion modeling
These methods are taught and practiced in dedicated exercise units.
are presented and afterwards demonstrated in practical training units.
- Previous knowledge expected
-
Basic knowledge of waste management processes and technologies is strongly recommended, e.g. attending the course "Abfallwirtschaft und abfallentsorgung (813.100) or Global Waste Management I and/or II (813.300, 813.301) or other adequate lectures.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
After the successful completion of this course, the students have the knowledge about conventional and very innovative measuring methods and processes to monitor greenhouse relevant gas emissions from diverse waste treatment processes, they know the strenght and weakness of the systems as well as the relevance of these waste related emissions in a comprehensive context and possibilities to mitigate them.
