Environmental technology is divided into four sub-areas: air pollution control, water supply and treatment, waste treatment, and noise protection. Since water and waste are covered in other courses, this course focuses on the sub-areas of air pollution control and noise protection. Motivational and background units discuss key concepts and technologies for air pollution control as well as the physical principles of noise generation and noise propagation. Participants then conduct independent research and calculations, which are presented and discussed in the forum.

After completing the course, students will be able to...
... translate environmental limits specified by authorities into practical process requirements.
... propose appropriate equipment for the separation of specified particulate matter and/or aerosols.
... characterize pollutant pathways using separation efficiencies and concentration measurements.
... critically analyze/question specified exhaust gas treatment chains for best available technology.
... quantitatively evaluate the combined effect of multiple noise sources.
... propose noise protection measures based on sound reasoning and evaluate the measures quantitatively.
