The course offers a comprehensive overview of the entire value chain of wood and renewable raw materials, from the forest to the market. It addresses the global significance of forests (particularly their role as CO₂ sinks) and the ongoing transformation of forests due to climate change. Building on this foundation, it covers key wood technology topics: the quality of wood and fibers, the individual processing steps from the log to the final product, and the role of the paper industry as well as the processing of alternative renewable raw materials. In addition, the course introduces markets, certification approaches, and material flowbased analyses to underscore the role of wood as a future-ready material.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
After ther successful completion of the course, students will be able to...
... explain the importance of forests as CO₂ sinks and describe the impacts of climate change on forests.
... describe the processing steps for wood and other renewable raw materials and assess how these steps affect material quality.
... analyze markets, certification schemes, and material flows, and explain their roles in a sustainable bioeconomy.
