Content

This lecture covers topics of physical chemistry that are relevant for bio(nano)sciences. The course content can be seen as complementary and adds depth to the lecture in Biophysical Chemistry. It is therefore recommended that the students are familiar with the contents of this course.
The lecture will cover statistical thermodynamics, molecular interactions, molecules in motion, molecular reaction dynamics, physical kinetics, polymer, and colloidal solutions. The mathematical methods necessary to follow the different topics will be presented.

Previous knowledge expected

Basic knowledge of chemistry, physics, and mathematics.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:
1.Explain the principles of statistical thermodynamics, molecular interactions, and physical kinetics relevant to processes in bio(nano)systems.
2.Describe the nature and consequences of molecular physical interactions such as van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, and hydrophobic interactions in complex systems.
3.Apply mathematical and conceptual models to analyze molecular motion, reaction dynamics, and thermodynamic processes in solution and at interfaces.
4.Evaluate the applicability and limitations of theoretical models in interpreting kinetic and thermodynamic behavior in polymer, colloidal, and interfacial systems.
You can find more details like the schedule or information about exams on the course-page in BOKUonline.
