This seminar introduces water and soil management concepts in rural areas, with a focus on subtropical to dryland conditions (note: the thematic focus will shift from the tropics to the subtropics and drylands). It combines introductory units with student-developed mini projects that are refined throughout the course. The main emphasis is on rehabilitating degraded agro-ecosystems and sustainable soil and water management.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
- Identify and characterize land and water degradation across socio-ecological contexts in rural subtropics and drylands.
- Apply appropriate tools and models to quantify land and water degradation processes and impacts.
- Design evidence-based agroecological rehabilitation and sustainable land and water management strategies.
- Evaluate trade-offs, uncertainties, and monitoring indicators to assess the effectiveness of proposed interventions, and communicate results clearly.
