Content

Exercises on BOKU-relevant topics such as environment, climate, food technology, etc.
•Exercises for vocabulary expansion / subject-specific vocabulary
•Reading and listening comprehension exercises on subject-specific topics
•Review of difficult grammar chapters: syntax / passive voice / pronominal adverbs / adjective declension / subjunctive, etc.
•Style and expression: useful phrases / idiomatic expressions / indirect speech for quotations / expressions for text summaries, etc.
•Speaking: discussion / rhetorical devices / science communication, etc.
Current texts and audio materials will be analyzed and discussed. The course is conducted interactively, i.e., active participation of students, e.g., in questions and discussions, is expected. Basic knowledge of grammar is required; difficult chapters will be sufficiently addressed. Expression and style will be specifically practiced using useful phrases.


CONFERENCE SIMULATION: This part of the course will be held in a block format and includes:
- Research on a chosen topic (preparatory work)
- Development of solution approaches in groups
- Group discussion
- Presentation techniques / presenting and reporting on scientific topics
- Science communication
- Audience discussion (responding to questions)
- Video analysis (optional, depending on student preference)
- Written follow-up: submission of presentation slides, preparation of a project report, and writing a reflection

The aim of this project work is to create a realistic speaking situation and to strengthen students’ skills in speaking and presenting on scientific topics. In addition, the project is designed to encourage active participation in discussions and to further develop students’ communicative competence in academic contexts.
