The course teaches basic methods for evaluating products and technologies throughout their entire life cycle. It provides a systematic understanding of how to structure complex decisions based on multiple criteria (qualitative and quantitative), e.g. using material flow analysis. Economic, ecological and social evaluation methods are covered (e.g. life cycle assessment, cost-benefit analysis, risk analysis/risk assessment, ‘safe and sustainable by design’ concept). The content is reinforced during the course through three practical exercises.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
Upon completion of the course, students will have gained an overview of methods for evaluating products and technologies, learned how to select specific approaches depending on the issue at hand, and acquired a basic understanding of how to apply selected methods. They will thus be able to systematically analyse and evaluate products and technologies based on economic, social and environmental criteria. In addition, they will be able to critically interpret evaluation results.
